Year 3 Newsletter October 2021

Year 3 have had a fantastic start to the school year. They have settled back into school routines beautifully and have welcomed new staff with kindness and enthusiasm. We are all so proud of what they have achieved so far and can’t wait to see their Year 3 journey unfold!
Maths
This half term we have been focusing on place value and representing numbers using concrete resources. Year 3 have impressed everyone with their ability to use counters, rods and bundles to show numbers up to 1,000! We have also played some amazing games online and in class. our favourite so far is SPLAT! The children have shown great resilience in solving challenging problems! We are looking forward to the learning all about multiplications next half term.
Science
We have been investigating rocks, fossils and soils this half term. Year 3 were amazed to find a variety of crystals, rocks, fossils and pottery in our allotment patch! Throughout this topic they have demonstrated their ability to work scientifically to perform experiments and analyse their results.
Religious Education
This half term we have been focusing on home and families. We have been moved by the compassion and empathy shown by Year 3 when discussing our families. Year 3 delved into bible verses to discover Jesus’s teachings on families and behaviour. Our favourite verse was Romans 12:8, which tells us to use our gifts for good an d encourage others to do the same. We have also been learning about Islam and have enjoyed listen-ing to stories from the life of Muhammad. Year 3 found the call to prayer relaxing and enjoyed virtual tours of Mosques around the world.
Literacy
Year 3 have thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘The Street Beneath My Feet’ and using this to make their own poster about the layers of the Earth. We have been massively impressed with their use of similes, inverted com-mas and prepositional phrases. They have made great progress through the term so far and we can’t wait to see their work on ‘Stone Age Boy’ next half term!
In Geography we have been exploring maps and their symbols. Year 3 have worked tremendously hard to create their own maps and use directional language to give instructions.
In Art and DT we have been using burrowing animals as a base to create beautiful clay sculptures. We have al-so looked at Stone Age and Iron Age art to prepare us for our topic next half term.
Year 3 have been very lucky to have both Rugby and Commando Joe’s this half term! In Commando Joe’s we have been basing our missions on the expeditions of Earnest Shackleton. We have loved working as a team to build bridges, fort and scavenge for food!
