Year 2 Newsletter

Year 2 have made a fantastic start to the year and we are so proud of their achievements. They have settled well with new staff, new routines and new year expectations. Thank you for a very welcoming start to the school year.
Keep up the good work!
Maths
In maths we have been using practical equipment to help us understand number value as well as addition and subtraction rules. We have used a range of resources to demonstrate knowledge and reasoning, including Number-lines, Rekenreks and number buses. The children have used all of their St Bede’s Sparks to help them solve difficult problems and explain their reasoning.
Geography
We have been looking at the UK and its features, including human and physical features, countries and capital cities, mountains and our nearest city, Newcastle. We’ve worked well in teams to ex-plore and sort features, discussing geographical features we find at-tractive and why. We talked about landmarks in Newcastle and made tourist posters and leaflets to share our knowledge of our beloved city. We have looked at England’s capital, discussing physical and human fea-tures, comparing the capital to our local city.
RE
We have looked at beginnings in RE, discussing what we wonder about our own, and our world’s, beginnings. We talked about how we celebrate begin-nings, whether that be a birthday or saying a prayer at the beginning of the day. We’ve also began looking at signs and symbols, focusing on bap-tism. We have made invitations, exploring how baptism welcomes us to the faith. We will continue exploring signs and symbols in the new half term.
Science
In science we have explored materials, their uses and their properties. We have loved ma-nipulating materials and experi-menting with their uses. Our favourite lesson was when we worked in teams to design something that met criteria given to us, whether it was a property, use or a material. We showed great team work.
Literacy
In Literacy we have worked so hard, read-ing Little Red Reading Hood and George and the Dragon, using the stories to write our own sentences to re-write our own version of the stories. We are very creative and imaginative, showing innovation when writing.
PE
This half term we have de-veloped our problem solving skills during Commando Joes sessions. We have enjoyed working as a team to over-come obstacles and learnt how to communicate with each other in order to be successful in our missions. We also worked on our fun-damental skills, such as run-ning, jumping and skipping. We’ve loved all the new team games we have learned this half-term.
