What a fantastic first half term we have had in Year 1. The children have been settling into their new classroom and enjoying the outdoor learning area we have. They are becoming more independent and taking responsibility for caring for both of our learning environments and the resources they are using for their learning.

he children have all been reading daily working on their fluency and recall of the single sounds and the special friends (two letters that make one sound). The children have been practising blending the sounds together to read words and have been bringing home reading activities and books to match what they have been learn-ing in their phonics groups.  They have also been writing the sounds with a focus on the mnemonics  which help them to remember how to form the letters correctly. We will be moving into new phonics groups based on the children’s progress so please look out for the reading books and activities we send home and continue to support your child with them.

In RE we have been exploring the importance of families . We have been naming different members of the family and thinking about how they show us love and how we can show them love in return.

We have been looking carefully at how numbers up to ten  are composed  and breaking them into two parts. We have also been practising counting in tens up to 100 and using lots of resources that help us to explore numbers.

In PE we have been focusing on the fundamental skills of jumping, hopping, skipping, running and also dodging and catching to help us when we move on to team games. On Wednesday’s we have our Command Jo’s sessions run by NUFC which help us to work on our teamwork, problem solving and resilience.

We are continuing to spend lots of time outdoors, whatever the weather. We have enjoyed building our own dens to help us with our instruction writing. We have also used our outdoor area to help us with our geography and science learning by exploring seasonal weather patterns and identifying the trees, plants and flowers we have growing in our garden.

In art we have been  working on the skills needed for a self portrait. We have looked carefully at our own faces and explored drawing with different materials.

In music we have been trying to keep time and working on repeating a rhythm using the right tempo by clapping or playing an instrument.
