Year 5 Newsletter Autumn 1 2021

What a great half term we have had. Everyone has settled so well into school life. As a class we are currently enjoying reading Hamish and the world stoppers. Let us know if you have any recommendations for what to read next.
Some children from our class are learning to be peer mentors through Northumberland County Council. Once qualified they will be able to support
other children within the school with the skills they have learnt.
We have been developing our Rugby Skills this half term looking at skills like throwing and catching before moving onto tournament style matches.
This half term in Commando Joes we have been learning about the explorer Ranulph Fiennes. His strong teamwork and communication skills have encouraged us to try and improve our own. We have completed missions in teams based on the accomplishments of Ranulph.
We are learning to play the recorder. We know the notes B A and G and have began to learn Hot Cross Buns and Mary had a little Lamb. We will continue to learn and practice next half term.
We designed, built and tested our bottle rockets in teams. We realised if our rockets were aerodynamic they would fly further.
In RE we have thought about ourselves and others. We have researched individuals who have chosen to put their faith in God and explored why. We have also studied Islam this half term. We have focused on the festivals of Ramadan and Eid and explored why they are important to Muslims. We created some beautiful Ramadan boxes using signs and symbols of Islam.
We have been investigating forces this half term. We have learnt all about Isaac Newton’s discovery of gravity before investigating how forces like air resistance help planes and parachutes to stay in the air.
We have worked on our fieldwork skills this half term. We have learnt how to read 4 fig-ure grid references and use a compass. We have read and explored OS maps and used them to find landmarks.
We have been lucky enough to be able to harvest produce from our allotment this half term. We have used the carrots we harvested to make our own carrot soup.
In our English lessons we have been reading Zoo by Anthony Browne. We have used it to write our own stories from a different characters point of view focusing on making sure every sentence is the best we can produce.
We have been working hard to secure our knowledge of decimals this half term. We have investigated tenths and hundredths to understand how to read and write decimals and to solve problems.
